Questions Regarding New Graduation Requirements for Ninth-Grade Class of 2011-12:


1.  How does the relatively new course Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis fit within the math sequence?

Sample math sequences for the Advanced Studies Diploma to include Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis would be:

            Algebra I, Parts 1 and 2 (double blocked)
            Geometry
            Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis
            Algebra II
                  or
            Algebra I
            Geometry
            Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis
            Algebra II
           

A sample math sequence for the Standard Diploma to include Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis would be:

            Algebra I, Part 1
            Algebra I, Part 2
            Geometry
            Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis
                   or
            Algebra I
            Geometry
            Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis

More advanced math sequences are available which include Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Cambridge Programme courses.          

2.  Will Algebra I, Part 1 count as a math credit? 

No, Algebra I, Part 1 will count as elective credit only.  Students will receive math credit for Algebra I after completing Algebra I, Part 2.

3.  At what grade level will the new Economics and Personal Finance course be offered?

This course will be offered at the junior or senior level.

4.  Will there be options for students other than taking the course during the school day?

The course will also be offered through Virtual Virginia.

5. What are the two additional required standard units of credit for the Advanced Studies Diploma?

Economics and Personal Finance is now required.  One additional elective has been added to the Advanced Studies Diploma for a total of three electives.

6.  Have the number of required verified units of credit changed?

No. The Advanced Studies Diploma requires nine verified units of credit in defined subject areas. The Standard Diploma requires six verified units of credit.
